September 2026: the month the sky changes season

After the event-packed month of August, September 2026 turns down the volume without losing its appeal. This is the month when astronomical summer officially gives way to autumn, with the equinox on September 23, and the Full Moon most closely tied to this seasonal shift — the Harvest Moon — rises almost at the very instant it reaches fullness, an alignment that rarely happens with this kind of precision. On the same night, September 26, Neptune reaches opposition: the ice giant is at its brightest exactly as the Full Moon floods the sky with light, a contrast that makes the event more of an appointment for dedicated observers than a comfortable viewing occasion. On the planetary front, Venus dominates the second half of the month: on September 22 it reaches its brightest point of the year, while between September 6 and 14 the Moon sweeps past Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus one after another, offering a series of close encounters to follow night by night. Nights are also noticeably longer than in August, handing over increasingly generous windows of dark sky for deep-sky observing.

Moon phases and observing planning

September 2026's phases lay out a well-structured month. After the Last Quarter on September 4, the sky darkens steadily toward the New Moon on September 11, which opens a window of near-total darkness right around the peak of the September Perseids. The best stretch of the month for meteors and deep-sky work runs roughly from September 6 to 16. In the second half of the month the Moon waxes again: the First Quarter on September 18 mainly interferes with the early part of the night, while the Full Moon on September 26 closes the lunar cycle in near-perfect coincidence with the equinox.

The Harvest Moon isn't simply "September's Full Moon": by definition it's the Full Moon closest to the autumn equinox, and in some years it can even fall in October. In the days immediately before and after, the Moon rises unusually little later from one evening to the next — twenty to thirty minutes instead of the usual fifty — giving several consecutive evenings where the lunar disc appears almost right after sunset. Before electric lighting, this meant farmers could keep working the fields by moonlight late into the night — hence the traditional name. 2026 is a particularly favourable year to watch this effect: from Italy, the Moon reaches fullness almost exactly as it rises, appearing huge and orange just above the eastern horizon at sunset.


September 6–14 — The Moon meets Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus ⭐

The observing highlight of the month is a sequence of close approaches between the waning Moon (before September 11) or waxing Moon (after the 11th) and four planets, one after another, within a little over a week.

  • September 6, morning: the thin waning crescent Moon (22% illuminated) passes about 3° from Mars in the constellation Gemini. Look low over the eastern horizon before sunrise.
  • September 8, morning: the Moon, now a razor-thin crescent (7%), skims within less than 1° of Jupiter in Cancer. In some parts of the world (Canada, Greenland, Russia, the contiguous United States) this produces a lunar occultation of Jupiter, not visible from Italy.
  • September 13, evening twilight: an extremely thin crescent Moon (2% illuminated) skims Mercury in the constellation Virgo, low over the western horizon shortly after sunset: a challenging observation that requires a clear horizon and transparent skies.
  • September 14, evening twilight: the Moon, now 12% illuminated, closes to within just 0.5° of Venus, also in Virgo. This is also the day of the daytime occultation described below.

None of these encounters require any equipment: all are visible to the naked eye, though binoculars help pick out Mercury and the thinnest crescents in bright twilight. The sequence is a good excuse to watch the same patch of sky every evening and see how the Moon shifts position, night after night, against the planetary "fixed points."


September 9 — Peak of the September Perseids (ε-Perseids)

Not to be confused with the far more famous August Perseids, the ε-Perseids (or September Perseids) are a minor but reliable shower with a radiant in the constellation Perseus. According to the official calendar of the International Meteor Organization, the shower is active from September 5 to 21 and peaks on September 9, with a theoretical ZHR of about 8 meteors per hour: modest numbers compared with August, but the advantage in 2026 is that the peak falls right before the September 11 New Moon, so it's entirely free of moonlight interference. The ε-Perseids are known for producing a fair share of bright meteors; in some past years (2008 and 2013) the shower showed sharper activity spikes than expected, which is why observers are encouraged to keep an eye on the nights immediately before and after the peak as well.

The radiant is well placed for most of the night from Italian latitudes, from around 22:00–23:00 local time onward. As with any meteor shower, no optical equipment is needed: a wide, dark sky far from city lights is all that matters.

In the same region of the sky, from September 10 to October 8, a second minor shower is also active: the September Lyncids, with a radiant in the constellation Lynx and a peak around September 13 (estimated ZHR 3-4). This is a still poorly characterised stream, of interest mainly to experienced observers or those running systematic counts.

Toward the end of the month, on September 20, the Southern Taurids officially begin — a meteor complex linked to comet 2P/Encke that will dominate autumn meteor activity through December: at this early stage the rates are still very low (the real peak isn't expected until early November), but it's worth knowing that from here on, month by month, the "antihelion source" gives way to the Taurids.


September 14 — Daytime occultation of Venus

On September 14 a rare and technically demanding phenomenon takes place: an occultation of Venus by the Moon, visible in broad daylight from much of Europe, Italy included. From our latitudes the event falls roughly between 11:28 and 12:40 (Italian local time), with exact timings varying by a few minutes depending on location.

This is an observation reserved more for "insiders" than for the general public: in broad daylight, finding the Moon (which is still visible even at such a thin phase) and tracking Venus's disappearance behind its limb requires a carefully aimed pair of binoculars or a small telescope, an exceptionally clear sky, and knowing precisely where to look. Anyone with a telescope and appropriate filters can pre-set the Moon's position and wait for the planet's ingress at the lunar limb. As always when observing near the Sun in daylight, extreme caution is required: never point an instrument without first confirming with certainty where the Sun sits relative to the field of view, to avoid accidentally catching it.


September 22 — Venus at its brightest of the year ⭐

On September 22, Venus reaches a magnitude of about −4.8, its peak brightness for all of 2026. The planet sits in the constellation Virgo and should be sought low over the southwestern horizon shortly after sunset: being so close to the horizon, a clear view toward west-southwest makes the difference between a good sighting and losing it behind buildings or hills.

The curious detail for telescope users is that at peak brilliance Venus doesn't show a full disc at all: it appears as a thin crescent, only about 22% illuminated. The combination of a large apparent disc (because the planet is relatively close to Earth) and a thin phase is precisely what produces the peak in apparent brightness — the same principle, on a different scale, that governs the brightness of intermediate Moon phases. Even a small 60-80 mm telescope reveals this crescent clearly.


September 23 — Autumn equinox

The exact moment of the 2026 autumn equinox falls on September 23 at 02:06 Italian time (00:06 UTC), when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward. By astronomical convention, this is the instant that marks the start of autumn in the northern hemisphere and the start of spring in the southern hemisphere. The name "equinox" — from the Latin for "equal night" — refers to the theoretical parity between hours of daylight and darkness, though true equality actually occurs a few days later, due to atmospheric refraction, which slightly extends the perceived length of daylight near the horizon.

From an observing standpoint, the equinox doesn't bring a photogenic phenomenon of its own, but it's a good moment to take stock of the observing season: from here on, nights lengthen quickly, twilight shortens, and dark sky becomes available earlier and earlier in the evening — no small advantage for anyone who doesn't want to stay up until the small hours to enjoy a truly dark sky.


September 26 — Harvest Moon and the ecliptic: Neptune at opposition

September 26 brings two events that share the same night but, in practice, work against each other observationally. At 18:49 Italian time, the Full Moon occurs — the Harvest Moon already mentioned. A few hours later, at 03:28 CEST on September 26 (01:28 UTC), Neptune reaches opposition to the Sun: the moment of the year when the outermost planet of the Solar System is closest to Earth and shines at its brightest, around magnitude 7.8, in the constellation Pisces.

The problem is obvious: a planetary opposition is best observed under a dark sky, but the near-simultaneous Full Moon floods the entire night with light, making the hunt for an already faint object like Neptune (which needs at least a good pair of binoculars, or better, a telescope, regardless) considerably harder than usual. Anyone determined to try anyway can use the geometric proximity to their advantage: Neptune sits not far from Saturn, also in Pisces, which can serve as a low-power reference point with a star chart or planetarium app. For a clean view of the planet, though, it's better to wait for the following nights, when the waning Moon rises later and leaves a few hours of dark sky early in the evening.


Deep-sky in September: summer bows out, autumn moves in

September marks the changing of the guard between the summer and autumn sky. The galactic core in Sagittarius, now low and only visible early in the night, is progressively giving way to a sky dominated by the Summer Triangle — still high — and the first autumn constellations rising in the east. Longer nights compared with August offer increasingly generous windows of dark sky, especially during the week around the September 11 New Moon.

  • Summer Triangle — M27, M57, Albireo — Vega, Deneb and Altair remain high in the early part of the night. The Dumbbell Nebula (M27) in Vulpecula and the Ring Nebula (M57) in Lyra are still excellent targets for any aperture, while Albireo in Cygnus remains a classic for its gold-and-blue colour contrast between the two components of the double star.
  • Veil Nebula and North America Nebula (NGC 6960/6992, NGC 7000) — Under dark skies and with a narrowband filter (OIII or UHC), the Cygnus region offers some of the season's most photogenic targets: the supernova remnant of the Veil and the North America Nebula, both excellent subjects for wide-field astrophotography.
  • M31 (Andromeda Galaxy) and M33 (Triangulum Galaxy) — Climb higher and higher in the east during the second half of the night, a concrete sign that the autumn sky is arriving. September is the right month to resume imaging sessions on Andromeda with fast optics, while M33, larger and fainter, rewards truly dark skies.
  • Double Cluster in Perseus (NGC 869 and NGC 884) — Increasingly comfortable to observe in the early evening, an ideal target in binoculars or at low magnification, and a great way to fill the gaps between counts during the ε-Perseid watch.
  • M15 (Pegasus) — One of the densest and most compact globular clusters in the northern sky, well placed in the early and mid-evening, an excellent target for medium-aperture telescopes.
  • M2 (Aquarius) — Another notable globular cluster, visible in the same region of sky the Full Moon will cross along the ecliptic on September 26: best imaged, then, during the New Moon windows at the start or end of the month.

A typical evening's strategy: open with the last Sagittarius and Scutum targets as the sky darkens, spend the middle of the night on the Summer Triangle and the Cygnus region, and close out later sessions on Andromeda, Triangulum and the Double Cluster, now comfortably high in the east. The weeks around the September 11 New Moon remain the month's best window for any faint target.


Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping Neptune on September 26 just because "it's opposition, so it must be the best time." With the Full Moon nearly coincident, the following nights — when the Moon rises later and wanes — offer far better conditions for finding it.
  • Attempting the September 14 Venus occultation without being absolutely certain of the Sun's position in the instrument's field of view. In broad daylight, never point binoculars or telescopes near the Sun without first checking precisely where it is.
  • Expecting a full, dazzling disc from Venus on September 22: at peak brilliance the planet actually shows a thin crescent, only about a fifth illuminated. Apparent brightness depends on the combination of phase and distance, not on a full phase.
  • Confusing the September Perseids with the August ones. These are different showers, with different parent bodies and much lower hourly rates (ZHR 8 versus 100): a pleasant watch, but one to approach with realistic expectations.
  • Underestimating the Moon-planet sequence between September 6 and 14 because "they're just conjunctions, not rare events." Their tight, evening-by-evening cadence makes them an excellent way to learn to recognise the planets and their position along the ecliptic.
  • Putting off deep-sky sessions until the end of the month: the best window remains the one centred on the September 11 New Moon, before the waxing and then full Moon brighten the sky again.

September 2026 is more a month of transition than of grand spectacle, but it's far from empty: a week of close encounters between the Moon and four planets, a minor meteor shower undisturbed by moonlight, a daytime occultation of Venus for better-equipped observers, the year's brightest moment for the sky's most luminous planet, the equinox that officially opens autumn, and, to close the month, a Harvest Moon that rises almost exactly at the instant of its fullness.

The advice remains the same as ever: the dark-sky window around the September 11 New Moon is the month's most valuable resource, both for meteors and for deep-sky work. Make good use of it, because the next big occasion — Saturn's opposition on October 4 — is already just around the corner.
