Rangefinders
The laser rangefinder is an optoelectronic instrument that measures the distance to a target in real time via a laser pulse, returning the value in metres or yards with decimetre or metre precision. Unlike visual estimation or GPS, a rangefinder delivers a direct and instantaneous measurement, independent of satellite coverage and usable in any weather condition.
Optical rangefinders fall into two main usage categories: golf models, optimised for vertical targets such as flags and pins with slope compensation technology, and hunting and shooting models, designed for moving or long-distance targets with integrated ballistic reticles and angle compensation. Both categories share the same underlying laser technology but differ significantly in software features and field operation.
Golf, hunting or universal rangefinder? How to choose the right one
Golf rangefinders prioritise target acquisition speed and the Pin Seeker or Flag Lock function, which isolates the flag while ignoring the background. Slope compensation calculates the equivalent flat distance accounting for elevation change, giving the player the actual distance to play. These are compact, lightweight instruments optimised for typical distances of 10 to 400 metres.
Hunting and shooting rangefinders cover greater distances — often exceeding 1000 metres — and integrate advanced features such as shot angle compensation, ballistic trajectory calculation and, in top-end models, wind speed readout or pairing with external ballistic apps. Some models feature an illuminated reticle and can be used as an auxiliary sighting scope.
When to choose a rangefinder:
- You play golf and want precise flag distances with slope compensation
- You hunt or practise long-range shooting and need reliable ballistic data
- You hike, climb or pursue outdoor activities and want a versatile measuring tool
- You are looking for a compact accessory to complement a binocular or spotting scope
