The Antlia Herschel wedge with integrated CaK 3nm filter replaces the standard diagonal at the rear of refractor telescopes, enabling high-contrast imaging of solar granulation and sunspots. The Herschel wedge design is well known for producing sharper, higher-contrast images than other solar light-reduction systems.
The wedge transmits a reduced, safe amount of light to the camera; image brightness can be conveniently adjusted via a control ring with aperture blades, similar to that used in camera lenses. Built with CNC machining and multi-coated anti-reflection optical components to minimize internal reflections and stray light, the system integrates an ultra-narrow band Antlia filter of 3nm, centered on the Calcium II K line at 393.3nm, mounted in a standard 1.25" holder. Unlike other designs that may overheat, the Antlia wedge directs excess energy into an extra-thick polycrystalline ceramic diffuser at the rear, with cooling vents for effective heat dissipation.
The system includes a right-angle prism, CaK filter, solar finder for centering the sun, and heat dissipation system. Intended for imaging only: not suitable for visual observation nor for solar prominence imaging. For use only with refractor telescopes (maximum aperture 120mm, minimum focal ratio f/5.5) to avoid damage to the instrument.
