Space technology applied to safe solar observation
The Baader Cool-Ceramic Safety Herschel Prism Mark II is the absolute reference instrument for visual solar observation with refractors. The Herschel prism principle uses only 4.6% of the incident light reflected from the first prism surface for observation, directing the remaining 95.4% — the high-intensity thermal energy — to the internal light trap system. The transmission of 4.6% is further reduced by a factor of 1000 by the included ND 3.0 filter, bringing the light reaching the eye to completely safe levels. The Cool-Ceramic technology uses a multi-layer structure of heat shields and heat-absorbing ceramics — the same technology as the Space Shuttle heat tiles — to absorb radiant heat. The fully enclosed housing eliminates any risk: safe for private individuals, public institutions and schools without any additional front solar filter.
Mark II: integrated rotation mechanism for polarizing filters
The key innovation of the Mark II is the integrated rotation mechanism for polarizing filters. Since the Herschel prism naturally emits single polarized light, combining this mechanism with the optional Baader Single Polarizing Filter 2" (#2408342) enables stepless brightness adjustment — the optimal method for adapting solar contrast. All filters remain in the prism even when changing eyepieces. Included is the new Baader Solar Continuum Filter 7.5nm 2" (540nm) #2961581 for the sharpest solar images.
Ceramic Solar Finder, ClickLock and S58 dovetail
The integrated ceramic plate serves both as a thermal trap and Solar Finder. The ClickLock® 2" eyepiece holder clamps any eyepiece with just 15° of rotation — even with winter gloves. The S58 dovetail attachment system and the new factory-preset 3-point adjustment system complete the professional mechanics.
⚠️ Warning: The Herschel prism can only be used with refractor telescopes. Not compatible with reflecting telescopes or systems with optics near the focal point.
