The Baader Mark III Laser Collimator was rated “Best Laser Collimator” by Sky at Night Magazine. Designed for precise collimation of Newtonian and Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, it offers significant improvements over simpler laser models.

Collimating Newtonian Telescopes

  1. Insert the collimator loosely into the focuser (do not clamp) to prevent tilt.
  2. Turn on the laser and align the beam onto the primary mirror using the secondary mirror screws.
  3. Adjust the primary mirror so the laser beam returns into the laser’s own central aperture.

The translucent reticle makes it easy to check if the system is collimated: the laser point must return exactly to the center of the grid.

Collimating Schmidt-Cassegrain (SC) Telescopes

SC telescopes require high precision. Cheap lasers produce beams too wide for accurate alignment. The Baader Mark III solves this with a fine and focused laser point.

  • Insert the laser directly into the SC visual back without a diagonal, to avoid tilt errors.
  • From the front of the scope, check if the laser dot hits the center of the secondary mirror.
  • Use the three collimation screws on the secondary to center the dot in the reticle’s central aperture.
