Collimating Newtonian Telescopes
- Insert the collimator loosely into the focuser (do not clamp) to prevent tilt.
- Turn on the laser and align the beam onto the primary mirror using the secondary mirror screws.
- Adjust the primary mirror so the laser beam returns into the laser’s own central aperture.
The translucent reticle makes it easy to check if the system is collimated: the laser point must return exactly to the center of the grid.
Collimating Schmidt-Cassegrain (SC) Telescopes
SC telescopes require high precision. Cheap lasers produce beams too wide for accurate alignment. The Baader Mark III solves this with a fine and focused laser point.
- Insert the laser directly into the SC visual back without a diagonal, to avoid tilt errors.
- From the front of the scope, check if the laser dot hits the center of the secondary mirror.
- Use the three collimation screws on the secondary to center the dot in the reticle’s central aperture.
