AstroSolar® Silver/Gold OD 5.0 – Filter Technology and Certified Safety
The AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film OD 5.0 sets itself apart from common black filters by other manufacturers through its reflective metallic layers, which are significantly more effective at blocking red and especially infrared light. This approach ensures a superior level of safety at the required optical density OD 5.0, while also eliminating the unpleasant sensation of heat in the eyeball during prolonged observation.
The lateral anti-reflection treatment guarantees sharp, glare-free, and chromatically neutral vision. When to Use the Solar Viewer: Eclipses, Sunspots and Everyday Solar Observation
The Baader Solar Viewer is the essential tool for anyone who wants to observe the Sun safely. Key use cases include:
- Partial and annular solar eclipse: during all phases in which the Sun is not completely covered by the Moon, the use of a certified filter is mandatory.
- Total solar eclipse: the filter is required during all phases except the brief moments of full totality, when the solar corona can be observed safely with the naked eye.
- Sunspots: allows observation of the largest sunspots directly with the naked eye.
- Daily solar observation: for those who wish to regularly monitor solar surface activity.
Safety Guidelines for Correct Use
Never observe the Sun without a certified solar filter. Ordinary sunglasses, neutral photographic filters, or non-approved protective devices do not provide adequate protection and can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. Even when the Sun is 99% eclipsed, the remaining crescent is still bright enough to be dangerous without proper protection.
The AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film is designed exclusively for naked eye observation. It must not be used in combination with telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, or camera lenses.
