The Leica Ultravid 8x42 HD-Plus is the 8x42 reference binocular for birdwatchers, wildlife observers and demanding users seeking peak optical performance without compromise. Thanks to pure fluorite lenses — 9 elements per side — and the full Leica technology stack (ADC™, P40, HLS™, HDC®, AquaDura®), it delivers chromatically neutral images with exceptional contrast and tonal fidelity in any lighting condition. The 5.2 mm exit pupil and twilight factor of 18.3 make it effective from full daylight through to early-night conditions. The 8x42 format is the optimal balance of field of view, resolving power and image stability — which is why it is the most chosen format among professional wildlife observers worldwide.
Fluorite, 9 lenses per side: the most advanced optics in an 8x42 binocular
The optical configuration of the Ultravid 8x42 HD-Plus features 9 pure fluorite lenses per side, one more than the 7x42 model in the same series: the more complex layout is required to correct the additional aberrations introduced by 8x magnification at equal aperture. Fluorite’s Abbe dispersion value is the lowest of any commercial optical material, with near-complete elimination of secondary chromatic aberration. The HDC® multi-layer coating maximises light transmission; AquaDura® provides hydrophobic and oleophobic protection on outer lenses.
7.4° Field of View and P40 + HLS™ Prism System
With a real field of view of 7.4° (130 m at 1,000 m), the Leica Ultravid 8x42 offers a wide panorama for its magnification level: ideal for birdwatching in woodland, mountain trekking and safari. The roof prism system with P40 phase correction and HighLux-System HLS™ maximises internal reflectance and phase coherence across the full 400–700 nm spectrum. ADC™ (Automatic Diopter Compensation) automatically balances inter-ocular dioptre asymmetry, making the binocular ready to use without repeated manual adjustments. Internal focusing via central wheel, free of alignment drift. Minimum focus approx. 3 m for close-range observation of insects and flora.
Die-cast magnesium body, waterproof to 5 m
At 790 g for 121×142×67 mm, the die-cast magnesium body with nitrogen purge provides structural rigidity and waterproofing certified to 5 m depth: suitable for marine environments, heavy rain and high-humidity conditions. Twist-and-pull removable eyecups with 2 click stops and 15.5 mm eye relief (AP) deliver the full field of view even with corrective spectacles. Continuous interpupillary adjustment 55–75 mm. Tripod-ready via adapter LE42220. Supplied with: ergonomic neoprene strap, objective cap, rain guard, Cordura bag.
