The Celestron Edge HD 1100 is an aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with 280 mm aperture, f/10 focal ratio and 2800 mm focal length, designed to deliver diffraction-limited performance for both visual observation and astrophotography. The Edge HD optical system combines the proven compactness of classic Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes with a newly engineered optical design that produces a fully flat focal plane across the entire field of view — critical for achieving pinpoint star images to the very edge of the sensor, with image quality on par with dedicated astrographs.
Visual Observation: Pinpoint Stars to the Field Edge – Even with Wide-Angle Eyepieces
During visual use, Edge HD optics deliver pinpoint star images to the edge of the field even when paired with ultra-wide-angle 2-inch eyepieces — a result rarely achievable with conventional Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. The Starbright XLT multi-coating maximizes light transmission and ensures high contrast on both planetary targets and deep-sky objects, making the Edge HD 1100 a versatile instrument for extended observing sessions.
Astrophotography: Flat Field and Aberration-Free Imaging on Full-Frame Sensors
For astrophotography, the Edge HD system produces aberration-free images across the entire field of CCD and DSLR cameras, including full-frame format sensors. The flat focal plane eliminates the field curvature inherent in classic Schmidt-Cassegrains, allowing full use of the sensor surface with no coma, astigmatism or focus fall-off at the corners. The Edge HD 1100 is compatible with the Fastar/Hyperstar system, which converts the telescope into a fast focal ratio instrument for wide-field imaging.
Modularity and Focal Length Range from 560 to 12,000 mm
The Edge HD 1100 is designed for modular use with a wide range of accessories — including focal reducers, Barlow lenses and third-party cameras — enabling operation across a focal length range of 560 to 12,000 mm. This flexibility makes it suitable for a broad range of observing and imaging configurations, from high-magnification planetary work to long focal length imaging of nebulae and galaxies.
Thermal Equilibration, Mirror Lock and Primary Mirror Ventilation
The aluminum optical tube features microfiltered ventilation ports that accelerate thermal equilibration of the optics, reducing cool-down time in the field. The primary mirror locking system, operated by two knobs, eliminates mirror shift during focusing and long imaging sessions, ensuring stability and repeatability of the focal position throughout the night.
