What it's for

The use of additional accessories such as cameras, dew shields, tele-extenders, diagonals, and 2-inch eyepieces affects the balance of the telescope. It is therefore necessary to restore proper balance by adding one or more counterweights, making it easier to perform corrections with the mount and improving tracking accuracy.

Perfect balance is not required for the telescope to operate: it is enough to reduce or eliminate oscillations when tightening the mount's RA and DEC axis clamps. Additional counterweights help achieve proper balance and the resulting stability of the telescope.
