The Sky-Watcher Evostar 120EDX is an apochromatic ED doublet refractor designed to deliver high performance for both visual observation and astrophotography. As the direct successor to the Evostar 120ED, this model combines excellent optical quality with a robust and precise mechanical construction, making it a versatile instrument for demanding amateur astronomers.
The 120 mm aperture objective with a 900 mm focal length (f/7.5) uses Extra Low Dispersion OHARA FPL-53 glass, providing sharp, high-contrast images with chromatic aberration virtually eliminated. This ensures excellent results in both visual use and astronomical imaging.
ED optics with OHARA FPL-53 glass
The use of FPL-53 ED glass significantly reduces visible chromatic errors. Extra Low Dispersion glass is characterised by very low colour dispersion and a reduced refractive index, ensuring accurate colour correction and high image definition.
With its 120 mm aperture, the Evostar 120EDX reaches a level where detailed observations of planets, the Moon and double stars become possible, while also delivering strong performance for deep-sky visual observation and astrophotography.
Astrophotography at native or reduced focal length
For astrophotography, the optical tube can be used at its native focal length or reduced using the dedicated 0.85x flattener/reducer, resulting in a f/6.3 focal ratio. This configuration provides pinpoint stars across the entire field and an apochromatic image quality which, combined with the 120 mm aperture, delivers a resolution not achievable with smaller diameters.
High-capacity 2.8” focuser
The enlarged 2.8” focuser is more robust and precise than the previous generation. It features a 1:11 dual-speed reduction, full 360° rotation and a high load capacity, ensuring stable and accurate focusing even with heavy imaging equipment.
An external thread allows the use of third-party accessories or direct connection of the dedicated flattener/reducer.
Compact design and complete supply package
The upper carry handle allows ergonomic handling of the optical tube and easy storage inside the custom-fitted aluminium hard case. The retractable dew shield reduces the tube length from 848 mm to 774 mm, minimising overall size for transport and storage.
The Evostar 120EDX is supplied with tube rings and a Vixen/EQ5-style dovetail bar, an upper carry handle and a custom aluminium hard case designed for safe transport and protection of the instrument.
