Vai al moduloThe TeleVue Nagler Zoom 3-6mm was born from a very specific need of Al Nagler's: finding, night after night, the highest useful magnification that atmospheric seeing allows, without constantly swapping eyepieces. With a constant 50° apparent field of view across the entire zoom range and a design using just 5 elements in 3 groups, it delivers contrast and sharpness that rival a good fixed-focal-length eyepiece — a rare feat for a zoom.
Why a planetary zoom, not a wide-angle
Unlike the Nagler Type 6, designed for 82° immersion, the Zoom came from a different project: four eyepieces in one, with click-stops at 3, 4, 5 and 6mm (plus intermediate focal lengths), while keeping constant focus, constant apparent field of view, and roughly 10mm of constant eye relief across the whole range. Simply rotating the upper barrel changes magnification without ever losing focus — particularly useful when atmospheric conditions shift over the course of an evening and power needs quick adjustment.
Few optical elements, for maximum contrast
By keeping the lens count low (5 elements versus 7-9 in many competing zooms), the Nagler Zoom retains higher contrast, with fewer surfaces scattering light along the optical path. Multi-layer coating on all surfaces further reduces internal reflections.
Construction and compatibility
The 1.25" (31.75mm) barrel features filter threads for standard astronomy filters and a non-slip rubber grip. The eyecup is fold-down. At just 150 grams, it's among the lightest and most compact TeleVue eyepieces, suitable also for lightweight mounts and small refractors.

Who it's recommended for
Ideal for high-power lunar and planetary observing on short focal-length telescopes (fast apochromatic refractors, small Newtonians), for anyone wanting to fine-tune magnification in real time to match seeing conditions without carrying multiple fixed eyepieces. Not suitable for eyeglass wearers, given the limited 10mm eye relief.
