TS-Optics 1.25" Cheshire Collimator for Newtonian and Refractor Telescopes

The TS-Optics 1.25" Cheshire Collimator is a precision metal alignment tool designed for accurate collimation of Newtonian and refractor telescopes. It allows reliable optical alignment using a centered viewing position and a silvered 45° reflective surface.

Refractor Collimation

To collimate a refractor telescope, first cap the telescope, remove the diagonal, and insert the Cheshire collimator directly into the focuser. Use natural daylight or illuminate the angled silver surface through the side opening with a flashlight.

Looking through the small viewing aperture on top, one or more faint, usually overlapping circles will appear near the center. Adjust the push-pull screws of the objective cell until these circles merge into a single concentric ring. Once aligned, the refractor will deliver optimal image quality.

Important Notes

Before collimation, ensure that the focuser is properly aligned with the telescope tube. This tool can only be used with refractors equipped with an adjustable objective cell. With fixed cells, the collimator can still be used to assess alignment, but adjustments are not possible.

Newtonian Collimation

In Newtonian telescopes, the reflections of the primary and secondary mirrors must appear perfectly concentric. Thanks to the centered viewing geometry of the Cheshire collimator, this alignment can be achieved accurately and repeatably.
