The TSSKM-2 adapter is designed specifically for Sky-Watcher SkyMax Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes from 102 mm to 180 mm aperture, and for Orion Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes from 100 mm aperture and above. It replaces the standard 1.25" output with a 2" receptacle, enabling the use of wide-field eyepieces and other 2" accessories.
Why 2" Eyepieces Make Sense on a Maksutov
Sky-Watcher and Orion Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes have a long focal ratio, making them particularly well suited for use with long focal length eyepieces. However, eyepieces offering the widest apparent field of view and the largest field stop diameter are built in 2" format. Using the standard 1.25" focuser means giving up a significant portion of the available true field of view.
The internal baffle tube diameter of compatible Maksutov telescopes is approximately 30 mm. In practice, when using 2" eyepieces with a larger field stop, brightness does not drop off sharply but decreases gradually from the centre towards the edge. The human brain can compensate for brightness differences of up to approximately 15%: accepting a minimum illumination of 85%, the usable field stop diameter rises to 40 mm — delivering a real and measurable gain in true field of view.
Compatibility and Limitations
The TSSKM-2 adapter threads onto the 45 mm rear thread specific to Sky-Watcher Maksutov telescopes. It is compatible exclusively with Maksutov telescopes originally equipped with a 1.25" output: models already fitted with a factory 2" output have a different thread size on the rear of the optical tube and are not compatible. The 90 mm Maksutov is also not usable with this adapter due to its proximity to the focuser knob.
