Askar and Sharpstar are the two brands of Chinese manufacturer Sharpstar Optics, founded in 2000 and specialising in the production of high-performance apochromatic refractors for astrophotography. The range is distinguished by its use of premium extra-low dispersion glass — including Ohara FPL-53 — and by a design philosophy that prioritises flat field and focal speed, making it particularly well-suited for deep-sky imaging with APS-C and full-frame sensors.
The APO Triplet series (103, 120, 140, 160 and 185 mm at F/7) delivers high-resolution instruments for planetary observation and astrophotography, each with dedicated field flatteners and focal reducers. The FlatField Quadruplet (60F, 71F and 91F series) integrates field correction into the optical design, eliminating the need for additional correctors for full-frame sensors. The FRA series (300, 400, 500 and 600) offers fast refractors from f/5 to f/5.6, optimised for wide-field deep-sky imaging, with reducers available down to f/3.9. The FMA135 and FMA180 PRO are apochromatic photographic lenses at F/4.5, ideal for wide-angle sky photography and imaging with full-frame cameras. The Sharpstar line completes the range with the 61EDPH-II and 76EDPH refractors in FPL-53 glass at F/4.5, designed for fast astrophotography.
